What a Waveguide Changes — and What It Doesn't

A waveguide is a shaped horn in front of a tweeter. Because the word “horn” carries baggage, the industry rebranded the idea — but the physics is old, well understood, and more limited than either its fans or its critics admit.

What it changes

Directivity control. A bare dome tweeter beams narrower and narrower as frequency rises. Around the crossover, a mid-bass cone is usually still radiating wide while the tweeter has already narrowed — the two drivers hand over into the room with different footprints. A waveguide keeps the tweeter wide enough at the crossover to match the cone, so the room receives the same balance whether you are on axis or reflected off the side wall.

Consistency of that first reflection. Most of what people describe as “the room’s sound” is the first few milliseconds of reflections. Matching directivity at the crossover makes those reflections spectrally similar to the direct sound — which is a large part of what reviewers call “imaging” when it works.

Loading on the dome. Gentle acoustic loading can let a soft dome do its job with less excursion near its lower limit. Small effect, real effect.

What it doesn’t change

It is not a loudness trick. We are not after PA-style efficiency. The guide is sized to match directivity, not to shout.

It does not fix a bad crossover. Our Prototype A had a waveguide and still carried a 2–3 kHz artefact — the guide cannot compensate for a handover that arrives with the wrong slope or the wrong level.

It does not remove room problems. Reflections stay reflections. A waveguide makes them more predictable, not absent.

The honest summary

A waveguide is a tool for making the speaker’s radiated field coherent at the crossover. In our Reference program it is one part of a design that is measured end to end — and you can inspect the A/B comparison yourself in the measurement archive.
